Press Release: MoU signed between WHO and G4 Alliance
Memorandum of Understanding signed between the WHO and the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anaesthesia Care – G4 Alliance
Geneva, August 14, 2024 – The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anaesthesia Care (G4 Alliance) signed a three-year memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration and cooperation to improve integrated emergency, critical, surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anaesthesia care in low- and middle-income countries.
The memorandum of understanding, signed between Dr. Bruce Aylward, WHO Assistant Director-General, and Mr. Claudio Tanca, Executive Director of the G4 Alliance, marks a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and strengthening health systems to better respond to health emergencies.
Both organizations share the goal of integrated emergency, critical, surgical, obstetric, trauma and anesthesia care worldwide. The overarching areas for collaboration highlighted in the memorandum of understanding include:
UHC: Focusing on the role of operative care as an integral part of primary healthcare systems, especially in low and middle-income countries.
Dissemination of WHO Tools: Upscaling the dissemination of WHO’s clinical registry and quality improvement tools to enhance healthcare providers’ capabilities in delivering operative care efficiently.
Advocacy and Fundraising: Supporting advocacy efforts, creating a community of practice, and undertaking fundraising activities to increase the adoption of quality improvement platforms, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Data Collection and Monitoring: Improving outcomes and quality of operative care services through continuous data collection, analysis, and monitoring for service development and quality improvement.
This memorandum of understanding affirms the commitment of both WHO and G4 Alliance to collaborate closely, share resources, and work towards common objectives to improve integrated emergency, critical, surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anaesthesia care in low- and middle-income countries.
