Dr. Alfredo Enrique Borrero Vega, is an Ecuadorian neurosurgeon and politician. His educational journey includes a Diploma in Health Administration from Harvard University (2011), a Spinal Surgery Fellowship from Klinikum Benjamin Franklin in Berlin, Germany (1994), and a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the Catholic University of Cuenca, where he graduated with honors (1973-1980).
He is a prominent figure in Ecuadorian politics and healthcare. He served as the 52nd Vice President of Ecuador from 2021 to 2023. He assumed this role after winning the 2021 election as Guillermo Lasso’s running mate from the Creating Opportunities party.
Before entering politics, Dr. Borrero amassed extensive experience in healthcare and administration. He held positions such as the medical director of the Hospital Metropolitano of Quito from 2005 to 2014 and the Association of Private Hospitals and Clinics president from 2007 to 2014. Additionally, he serves as the dean and administrator of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad de las Americas (UDLA).
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Borrero played a crucial role as the director of Saving Lives, an initiative initiated by Lasso. Under his leadership, Saving Lives raised $8 million to support Ecuador’s healthcare system by purchasing essential supplies and equipment.
Throughout his career, which spans over 40 years in health administration, Dr. Borrero has demonstrated a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and quality in Ecuador. His contributions to both the medical and political sectors have left a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare landscape.
